OICS submission to Disability Royal Commission

OICS was pleased to be provided the opportunity to respond to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability’s 'Safeguards and Quality' issues paper.

We responded to Question 6 of the issues paper- What role does, or should, independent monitoring and oversight play in safeguarding the risk of people with disability to live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation?

Our response focuses on how the role of a National Preventive Mechanism under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment can safeguard the rights of people with disability in detention settings.
