Court Transport Unit review released

4 Dec 2020

The review of the ACT Corrective Services’ Court Transport Unit (CTU) conducted by the Office of ACT Inspector of Correctional Services has found that the CTU is highly regarded by the key stakeholders it services and the new court cells complex is a significant improvement. However, there are some issues that need to be addressed to improve the safety of both staff and detainees.

The ACT Inspector of Correctional Services, Neil McAllister, presented the review for tabling in the ACT Legislative Assembly today. The review makes 22 recommendations.

The CTU transports, manages and cares for hundreds of people in their custody every year. Mr McAllister said, “We heard many complimentary remarks about the professionalism and conduct of CTU officers, particularly in challenging circumstances.”

“We spoke with many CTU officers and heard their major concerns about managing children and young people in their custody, particularly given their lack of training. This issue must be addressed,” Mr McAllister said.

“CTU officers also need more training specific to their job before they commence work and there are some mandatory training courses that have not been completed by current CTU officers.”

The review also found issues with the recent acquisition of two vehicles by ACT Corrective Services and that another older vehicle is in urgent need of replacement.

The Inspector thanks CTU officers and all other stakeholders that contributed to the review.
