AHRC publishes report 'Implementing OPCAT in Australia'

1 Jul 2020

Earlier this week, the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) released their report Implementing OPCAT in Australia. OICS was pleased to have had the opportunity to make a submission to Stage 2 of the AHRC’s consultation for this report. The ACT received a special mention on page 33 of the final report for its OPCAT preparations, including that the 'ACT Inspector was established as a preventive oversight mechanism, with a key role in identifying systemic issues and thereby preventing ill treatment.'

As a body established under legislation designed to reflect the requirements and expectations of OPCAT, OICS is supportive of the AHRC’s recommendation to formally establish a network of National Preventative Mechanisms (NPMs). The ACT is yet to formally nominate its NPM(s).

OICS looks forward to continuing engagement with the bodies working on the implementation of OPCAT in Australia.
