Healthy Prison Review of the Alexander Maconochie Centre 2025

This is the third Healthy Prison Review of the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) conducted by the ACT Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services. The review examined all aspects of treatment and care for detained people, staff, and visitors within the correctional environment. The review considered several topics in particular focus:

  • Leadership and culture
  • Drugs and harm minimisation
  • Culturally appropriate care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Implementation of previous OICS and coronial recommendations
  • Purposeful activity
  • Rehabilitation and preparation for release.

The key recommendation of this review was that ACTCS implement a structured day of purposeful activity for detained people at the AMC, as an overarching strategy to promote rehabilitation, reduce reoffending, improve the motivation and wellbeing of detained people, and reduce demand for illicit drugs.

This review made 30 recommendations and 60 findings.
