Riot and serious fires at the Alexander Maconochie Centre on 10 November 2020

31 January 2022

This critical incident review examined the riot and serious fires that occurred in an accommodation unit at the Alexander Maconochie Centre. The incident commenced when detainees refused to move to their cells for the evening lock-in.  27 detainees were involved and the accommodation unit sustained significant damage.

This review found that the incident was not reasonably foreseeable by ACT Corrective Services and front line officers responded professionally in very difficult circumstances. The key issue identified was the lack of staff training and exercises on dealing with serious incidents. The review makes 13 recommendations.
