2018-19 was the first full year of operation for OICS. The year involved the completion of a thematic review into remand at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), the commencement of a whole of centre review of the AMC and five critical incident reviews. Key operational documents were also published, such as the ACT Standards for Adult Correctional Centres and Services.
We continued to work with key stakeholder within and outside the government and benefit from the expertise and insights they share about the care and treatment of detainees. Over the year, we also began work to prepare for the extension of our mandate in December 2018 to cover Bimberi Youth Justice Centre.
Neil McAllister, ACT Inspector of Correctional Services, stated ‘The 2018-19 year has provided a solid base from which we look forward to continuing our work promoting continuous improvement in ACT Correctional Centres and Services and Youth Justice Facilities.’
